South and West Australia - few know much about it. Here in the tones of a dusty pastel palette are the heights and arrangements of ridges and valleys. It turns out that this part of the continent's outback is quite well organized. The punchline, though, is that the sheer scale of this patterning is easily an order of magnitude larger than the norm. If we examine the straight scarp just east of Perth (the bay north of the SW tip), we see a normal dissection of land which at this scale seems minute and needing enlargement. Yet the same sort of pattern exists at much lower frequency (and more gently sloped) in the green middle levels of the continents core.
