The title is the river’s name which drains very flat ground where surfaces are nonetheless well sorted (in terms of drainage hierarchy and vegetation pattern). This is the famous peatland of western Siberia, said to hold huge amounts of methane waiting to be released in the coming thaw. This area is just south of Surgut, and may or may not be continuous permafrost. It is interesting that lakes have formed only in the highest parts of the drainage net, and that the icy vestiges of winter on May 20th are so sporadically distributed.
