The shoreline palette does justice to the varied zones of this often overlooked place. The long and complex peninsula in the north is the most populous area, and the center of that island shows a blasted set of margins around its main volcanic cones. In the south the broad valleys and glacial lakes are fine counterpoints to a series of ranges which are exceptionally rugged. Points and bays in the strait between the islands have unique character, while the peninsula to the far right is where many of the Maori live.
