The sea passage between Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula has been a key shipping route for many centuries. Singapore nestles within the tip of Malaysia, while at Sumatra’s apex sits the city of Banda Aceh. Sumatra’s spine is seen lined with fault scarps, abrupt small volcanoes, and the greatest eruptive remnant we know of - Lake Toba. In the lowlands of this very rainy region there are peat swamps with tropical forest cover, now interrupted visibly by clearings for resettlement schemes.
