So high above sea level that herders do not use it, this barren land is just north of the geographic center of the plateau. Lakes and geology and remnant icecaps show well. The title comes from the largest icecap, where scientists have extracted important ice cores in the ongoing accumulation of climate change research. The area is also important to a migratory antelope, the chiru.
