Far to the north of Asia’s geographic center is this gentle highland surrounded by glacial lakes and boggy river systems. The melt of midsummer has removed all but the highest of lake ice, and only wisps of snow remain of the drifts formed in the lee of crests. The snowbanks reveal broad areas of horizontal rock layers with steep edges. The glacial troughs are skinny and elongated, implying that this has long been a dry area whose snowfall accumulations are below the typical Arctic regime. North is at the bottom, and the mining city of Norilsk lies seventy kilometers to the right.
